Make Red Velvet Cake Pops Without Buttercream or Frosting
Did you know that Betty Crocker Red Velvet Cake Mix is an excellent choice for making homemade cake pop dough?
At Partysweets, we use the Steam Method to transform freshly baked cake into smooth, moist and mouldable cake pop dough without adding buttercream or frosting.
The secret is processing the cake immediately after baking, while it's still hot. The retained heat and moisture help the cake crumbs bind together, creating a soft, cohesive dough that's perfect for shaping cake pops.
Why make cake pops without frosting?
Traditional cake pop recipes often combine crumbled cake with buttercream or frosting. However, adding extra frosting can make your cake pop dough overly sweet and greasy.
Excess fat can also transfer onto white paper cake pop sticks, causing them to develop yellow stains.
With the Partysweets Steam Method, there's no need for additional buttercream. You get delicious Red Velvet Cake Pops with a beautiful texture and the perfect consistency for shaping.
How to Make Red Velvet Cake Pop Dough – The Partysweets Steam Method
Prepare the cake batter: make the Betty Crocker Red Velvet Cake Mix according to the package instructions using eggs, water and vegetable oil.
Prepare your baking tin: lightly grease a suitable baking tin, such as a brownie pan, and optionally line it with baking paper. This makes it easier to remove the cake immediately after baking.
Bake the cake: follow the recommended baking instructions until the cake is fully baked.
Work while the cake is hot: immediately remove the freshly baked cake from the tin and transfer it to your stand mixer bowl. Do not allow the cake to cool first!
Mix the warm cake: use a paddle attachment or dough hooks to mix the hot cake until it forms a smooth, cohesive and mouldable cake pop dough.
Allow to cool: let the cake pop dough cool sufficiently before portioning and shaping.
Shape your cake pops: use your favourite My Little Cakepop® mold or Daisy Makes® Cutter & Popper Set to create beautifully shaped Red Velvet Cake Pops.
Dip and decorate: coat your cake pops in melted Deco Melts or tempered chocolate and finish with your favourite edible decorations.
Partysweets Tip: timing is everything! For the best results, process your cake immediately after baking. The Steam Method works by using the moisture and heat still present in the freshly baked cake, eliminating the need for additional frosting.

Partysweets Tutorial – Make Your Own Red Velvet Teddy Bear Cake Pops
With the My Little Cakepop® Teddy Bear Mold, you can easily create beautifully shaped teddy bear cake pops with a professional finish!
How to make your Ted Velvet Cake Pops:
Shape your cake pop: roll your prepared Red Velvet cake pop dough into a ball and place it inside the My Little Cakepop® Teddy Bear Mold.
Press the mold firmly closed: the excess cake pop dough will be pushed out of the mold. Remove the excess dough and gently smooth the seam to create a beautifully defined teddy bear shape.
Insert the cake pop stick: dip approximately 1 cm of the tip of a lollipop stick into melted Deco Melts and insert the stick about halfway into the cake pop.
Allow the stick to set: place the teddy bear cake pop upright in a cake pop stand and allow the Deco Melts around the stick to harden completely.
Dip your teddy bear cake pop: fully submerge the bear in melted Deco Melts. Make sure the entire surface of the cake pop dough is covered to seal in moisture and help prevent the cake from drying out.
Remove excess coating: gently allow the excess Deco Melts to drip off. For an extra smooth and even finish, use a cake pop massager to help the coating flow off evenly.
Add a cake pop board: slide a My Little Cakepop® Cakepop Board onto the stick through the hole in the centre and carefully position it underneath the teddy bear. The perfect moment is when the coating has stopped dripping but hasn't completely hardened yet. This allows the board to adhere neatly to the cake pop.
The result? Adorable homemade Red Velvet Teddy Bear Cake Pops with a deliciously moist Red Velvet centre, a smooth coating and a beautiful professional finish!
Perfect for teddy bear baby showers, children's birthday parties, Valentine's Day, baby celebrations and creative dessert tables.
